Uinta fly question - Uintaman2 - 05-28-2025

In the back country often tiger and or cuts get selective on the fly they are taking, top 5 flies for picky trout mid summer.
My go to are renegades, mosquito, ant, small beetle.
Stumped on really picky fish.

Elk hair caddis, royal coachman, Adam's, balanced leach and dropper nymph

Those are excellent flies. I have done well with a small parachute PMD. Of course it’s similar to an adams but I can see it better. I also always have some small to medium stimulators. They are fun to plop on the surface near a deep ledge and watch the fish come up off the bottom and hit it. If stone flies are around you can drag that stimulator across the surface, making a wake. The last thing for picky fish is lite tippet and be quiet on the bank. I always have some 6x for that clear water. Good luck!

parachute Adams, parachute Coachman, parachute caddis, black pheasant-tailed nymph, hopper pattern of any type

It's crazy ,it's been years since I have fished the Uinta's , I never figured out why they would take a mosquito , but they would , also the renegade was one of the go to flies . There were times , like all fly fishing when they just get finicky , and there was times when just get a fly on the water . Some of the replies are all good flies to go to . I used to fish with a fly ,and bubble , being able to reach out there at times . It's been years since doing that . Now it's just the fly rods .

I always like renegades. But when they’re stubborn a beetle pattern. I tie with a black foam back, peacock belly and a little tuft of orange yarn on top so I can see it.

Soft hackles on a slow retrieve can work well on my secret big cutthroat lake.

My bad missed the ant in first list!!  But, got to have Black Ant pattern in the mix. The beetle pattern just mentioned is a good one Trout love ants and other terrestrial bugs!! I used to throw out and ant pattern with a bubble and lean my rod against a log let the wind drift it around and bendo! Fish on! Like bait fishing with  fly! Caught a lot of fish in high mountain lakes that way!! Throw some ant flies in your box!
