Pole overboard, Willard Bay. - MrShane - 05-26-2025

A couple hundred yards north of pole on west dike I dropped my second favorite Walleye rig overboard while trying to help Mike land a Walleye.
About 13-15’ fow.
White Quantum baitcaster with flipping switch.
Attracted to a 6.5’ Trophy rod, with a homemade hammered silver blade/red glass beads crawler harness.
Would love to get it back.

I’ll keep an eye out for it, a number of years ago I dropped a rod over board in freeway bay and a month later a member reported catching a rod and reel and offered to return it, if someone could describe it and it was mine and I got it back, hopefully someone snags your rod and gets it back to you.

BB’er had just barely nicked bottom when I locked her down, so maybe 18’ or so of line out.
Depending on how it fell between the rocks, there is a good chance of at least someone snagging it.

Was lucky enough to get my only lost rod back at Willard, also. I dragged a heavy spoon along where I knew the rod was, and snagged the line.

I'd owned that original Swedish Ambas Sad

eur 5000 reel for 40+ years and losing it was a blow. It cleaned up nicely, however.

(Edit to add: I HATE how this board substitutes an icon for common words, even those that are merely syllables inside a longer word. In this case s-a-d)

Oh Man that is a very kind offer!
I was running two poles and my buddy was running one and we were pretty busy.
We were so busy I did not even think to hit mark on my sonar.
I’m afraid I could be as much as a hundred or even more yards of where I think I dropped it.
The one thing I am sure of is I was very consistent in distance from the dike.

I thought of that several years back , when I donated two fly rods ,and a cell phone to Strawberry , fishing out of my pontoon boat . Sad

You would think after the first fly rod I would use a lanyard . Tongue

But OH!!! no , I lost another one . No I still don't use a lanyard , but I am a bit more careful . Big Grin

To the OP , I feel your pain ,both those fly rods , and reels were fairly high end . The first one was my first expensive ,and favorite fly rod , I had it for a long time ,actually wore the cork handle down so bad from the way I used to cast a fly rod with my old steel worker hands I had to replace the cork . The second one was actually a more expensive fly rod . They are both ,along with the cell phone are in Byrant's Fork , as said in Strawberry . Most likely they still are ,unless someone happened to snag them .

I knew right where mine was because of the kink in my sonar GPS track where I suddenly stopped and veered around. You might look closely at the track you made - assuming your sonar records tracks.

I am trying to head back up Thurs but due to traffic and living in Riverton I try to be off the water by noon or so.

I was running two bb’er poles and controlling my boat and Mike, being much much smarter than me, was only running one.
You can see how leery of the dike I was by how I was away from dike and keeping bouncers out of rocks, by how inconsistent I was while heading north (north is at bottom of screen for this pic).
Then I dropped pole overboard and made two circles back around.
We caught one or two Eyes just trying to snag pole in those two circles, then only having one pole and being able to concentrate I was then able to track the dike much more consistently.
Moral of this story: Don’t be greedy and run two poles in shallow rocky areas.

Sorry for your (second) pole loss. Hope you are able to find and recover it while it is still salvageable with a little cleaning. Just be warned that if you send down a camera to help locate it you might not like what you see down there.

What is worse about this loss is there was not even a fish attached to the end.
A Carp or Channel has probably picked up crawler harness by now and drug it off somewhere.
At least it was not a Stradic this time…
I was using two different styles of pole holders and when I went to help Mike I only barely inserted pole in to a cradle style holder instead of the rocket launcher tube next to it.

Those coordinates of where I lost that Walleye rod/reel combo are on my screenshot.
If you find that pole feel free to keep it, a gift for your generosity to dive for it.
Water in that area appears to have visibility of about 8-9’.
You just have to promise you will put it back in action and catch some Walleye for you with it!
