Kokanee at Flaming Gorge question - JArner - 08-08-2024 I’m headed to Flaming Gorge in the Mustang Ridge area this weekend. Wondering if anyone has had success finding Kokanee in that area. I have a kayak setup for fishing with a trolling motor and pedal drive so I can cover some distance if needed. Thanks in advance for any tips. RE: Kokanee at Flaming Gorge question - FishfulThinkin - 08-08-2024 I've caught some kokanee in the Jarvies canyon area a couple of miles upriver from Mustang. Might be a little far for kayaking. I'm sure there are others who know better how it is this year. Send Ryno a PM, he is the biologist up at the Gorge, I'm sure he can help you. https://bigfishtackle.com/forum/member.php?action=profile&uid=3182 RE: Kokanee at Flaming Gorge question - JArner - 08-09-2024 (08-08-2024, 11:42 PM)FishfulThinkin Wrote: I've caught some kokanee in the Jarvies canyon area a couple of miles upriver from Mustang. It would be a day trip in the kayak for sure. (08-09-2024, 02:52 AM)wiperhunter2 Wrote:(08-08-2024, 07:53 PM)JArner Wrote: I’m headed to Flaming Gorge in the Mustang Ridge area this weekend. Thank you, I'll reach out to him. RE: Kokanee at Flaming Gorge question - JArner - 08-13-2024 Quick update from my trip. I did not get out early but did manage a few hours out on the water between storms and keeping the kids entertained and fed. I did not mark many fish in my explorations and only managed one bite. I got a bit too excited trying to pull it from the downrigger clip and the fish was gone. I did speak with some guys on a boat that came in from Jarvies bay area. They managed one koke but most of the fish weren't hitting the options they offered. They marked them at 60'. The one bite I had was around 30'. I'll have to try it again and put more effort into fishing. RE: Kokanee at Flaming Gorge question - wiperhunter2 - 08-13-2024 (08-13-2024, 03:01 PM)JArner Wrote: Quick update from my trip. Bummer that the catching wasn't better, are you too far from Sheep creek to try it there, at the red cliffs? I've had good success there and some success at Hideout. Sheep Creek isn't too far from where we camp, I need to make a trip specific to fishing. I was hoping to slip in the fishing between family activities with paddle boards and PWC's. RE: Kokanee at Flaming Gorge question - Bduck - 08-14-2024 I'm considering a turn & burn trip Thursday 8-15 as a last hurrah this year to the Gorge. I've done 3 so far with good results & 1 to the Font. The year hasn't been great for me getting out as much going thru some health issues and with wife on the ailing side of a physical disability. Already looking fwd to what could be and hoping for a better next year. RE: Kokanee at Flaming Gorge question - Bduck - 08-17-2024 The turn & burn was the shortest trip thus far I've made. 6hrs round trip on the road to put in 4hrs fishing catching my limit of Kokes. Haven't had a good trip like this at the Gorge seems like in 4yrs. As a bonus I caught 1 fat 3lb bow (released) in the mix of my koke limit. Had 1 koke weigh in at 2.5lb and the other 3 at 1.5+. My trips usually have me home by 7pm, this trip at 5pm. ![]() 8-15-2024 RE: Kokanee at Flaming Gorge question - wiperhunter2 - 08-17-2024 (08-17-2024, 11:51 AM)Bduck Wrote: The turn & burn was the shortest trip thus far I've made. 6hrs round trip on the road to put in 4hrs fishing catching my limit of Kokes. Yea, getting older isn't for wimps, hard to avoid the health issues as we age, been through a few myself this year. I’ve heard a lot of complaints about the Koke fishing up there but haven’t experienced bad salmon fishing myself yet. Bonus on getting home early. |
