As I look through the stocking reports, I see a lot of Kokanee being stocked in Fish Lake as recently as yesterday. I don't see any put into East Canyon reflected in the report. Maybe it has not yet been updated.
It is a little disheartening to see that only 7 waters received stockings of fishable (not-June Sucker), non-salmonid species. I typically only fish for trout when I go to the high mountains so I would prefer to see a little more focus on fish diversity. Hopefully it is just early in the season or they aren't including other species on this report. Hopefully.
Starvation got 399 perch 8" long, which seems relatively insignificant in my admittedly uneducated opinion.
6 waters got tiger muskies, including 18K (roughly a third of all stocked) to Yuba. Any thoughts on why they are putting them in one of the few lakes with naturally reproducing Pike in Utah? Weren't they trying to thin the pike a couple of years ago? Maybe this is part of a plan to add enough managed predators to outcompete the breeders?

Including I attended a meeting at DNR in SLC yesterday and it was briefed on the Kokanee being stocked recently hence the stocking report isn't updated I suspect.

I'm wondering why... East canyon was one of the first places they tried Kokaonee way back I think in the '60's . they didn't catch on then. Wonder what's different now.

They used to be in there, but died out due to reduced water quality and inflow. That’s my knowledge on the situation at least. Perhaps those have been solved, and the DWR thinks they will take hold.
I don’t have any way to really target Kokanee since I’m shore bound, but it should be a good opportunity for others. I suspect the will be on the smaller side, but that’s just speculation on my part. At the very least, a spawning population should provide a good forage base for the large trout that lurk in there.

TrickyFish is correct on the history of Kokes in East. The problem was with the fertilizer runoff from upstream golf courses/Jeremy Ranch area. These nitrates settle to the lower depths of the lake and displace the oxygen in the water. This limited the Kokanee's ability to follow the thermocline to deeper depths in the summer months. (They will go down to depths of 40-70 feet in these smaller lakes.) This kept the fish in warmer waters, where they don't survive well at all.There is a very small naturally reproducing population in there currently. So hopefully the augmentation will allow the fish to rebound. I do not know if the pollutants have been reduced in the creek, but I sure hope they have. If not, the problem will persist, and the salmon will essentially die out again.
Incidentally this is the same reason the trout can suffer from the anchor worms up there. The worms do not do well if the trout can get to cooler/deeper waters.

East Canyon used to have kokanee when I first got stationed here in 76, not as many as some of the other lakes but we could usually catch a few while trolling triple teasers on lead core, not sure why they quit stocking them there. Glad to see that they stocked it with kokes. Thanks for the info.

That was my stomping grounds also, and like you, I also bagged a few of those kokes back then out of EC. Use to see them all the time spawning up the creek when I did a bit of Beaver control trapping. I hope they get them reestablished, it will be fun to see them run the creek again in the fall.

Pete, I remember accompanying you a couple of times to fish EC in the 70's fishing kokes. That's my first experience ever fishing for kokanee. Let the good times flash back.

I remember them being in there in the 50's when I fished the lake with my dad. I also remember the restrictions set forth in the fishing regs that closed the stream to fishing when they were spawning. We used to catch them but they never really had any size to them.

I used to see some decent sized kokes going up the river. My dad has one our friend mounted on his wall that went 4lbs and that was way early in the year while we were ice fishing. And that was in the late 80'S EARLY 90'S.

Actually we were fishing together the first time I ever caught one out of there. I had caught them before while stationed at Mt. Home AFB at Anderson Ranch Dam. We use to hunt Blue grouse together above Porcupine Res. as well.
