Slow Trolling at Willard - WeekendWarrior - 05-15-2019

Yesterday was a slow day trolling at Willard for me. I was by myself, so I only had two rods out on planer boards. I washed different crankbaits from about 1:00 to 5:00 at various speeds from 2.5 to 3.5 mph.

Good news was I avoided the skunk and caught my first walleye (even though he was a little guy). I thought I had a bite about 5 minutes before I pulled my lines in for the day (my first action of any kind) because my clicker stripped line off for a few seconds, but the tattle flag was still up on my board and no more line stripped off my reel, so I dismissed it. When I pulled my lines in to head home, I could tell there was a fish on and sure enough there was a walleye hanging on to the end of the line. I felt bad taking him for a short ski trip, but he was still vibrant when I let him go.

It turns out my braided line had slipped through my release even though I had wrapped it around the clip. This has never happened to me before, but I have heard many people say that they prefer mono with planer boards for this very reason.

Even though fishing was slow, it was WAY better than sitting at work.

I also have to give a shout out to Old Coot for showing me how to chase Wipers on Willard a couple of years ago. I have had many successful days using his methods, even though yesterday was a slow day. I really appreciate everyone's willingness to share their knowledge on this board and help others land some fish!

Re: [WeekendWarrior] Slow Trolling at Willard - Cowboypirate - 05-16-2019

I learned a new phrase today "washing some crankbaits" I will never have as much fun trolling again thinking that I am doing the dishes, How do I get that out of my head?

As for the braid, heard many complaints about the same problem, I will ask my father-in law and see how he got around it..
