Strawberry Bay Marina-Jet Ski - sliverslinger - 04-24-2019

Just saw on the Strawberry Bay Marina FB page that they will be renting Jet Skis this year. I understand that they have a business to try and run and grow...The people at the marina are nice people and provide a valuable service for everyone up there but I’m going to be honest, I’m not a fan of this move.

I agree. One of the nicest things about the Berry is that it is a relatively quiet place to go. With the addition to buzzing bee's it will certainly change the feel of the lake.

Can blame them for finding or creating an additional market/demographic however.....

that is the last thing I wanted to see why most fish strawberry is because no water skiers now we will have boat waves to deal with

most of the water ski and jet ski action is mostly confined to the narrows , hopefully fingers crossed it won't catch on

Re: [sliverslinger] Strawberry Bay Marina-Jet Ski - lovetofish - 04-26-2019

That is the LAST THING Strawberry needs. It's bad enough when the Yahoo's with large OB's decide to move and have absolutely no consideration for other boats on the water and buzz by going as fast as they can creating large waves.

If the people who are agoing to rent them are anything like the people who boat on Pineview and other recreational lakes it's going to suck. I'm glad I don't fish weekends.

When they fire those things up and go by the Kokes seem to disappear for us. I think they don't like the high pitched whine.

THAT IS ONE OF THE REASONS I WHINE ABOUT EM!!!!!!

Did the DNR give their stamp of approval for this? Now 'corn planters' and 'jet skiers' on Strawberry? Don't believe that's a step in the right direction for the quality fishery we've come to expect...IMO....
Did the DNR give their stamp of approval for this?
[#800000]Since Strawberry is Federally owned, water craft restrictions would come under Federal jurisdiction, not the state, I believe. Fishing regulations/restrictions are managed by the state.[/#800000]

[#800000]I personally don't care for jet ski's, but have nothing against the private marina company trying to serve its customer base with rental equipment. If it's profitable it will ensure the company is able to stay in business and offer it's services to ALL users - including the fishing folks. If it isn't profitable, it won't last long.[/#800000]

Not only that but there is something about the noise of a jet ski that shuts kokanee down. Must be the frequency , but whatever it is they do not like it.

Was up there today and they have a pile of new docks and a handful of new pontoon boats lined up waiting for open water.

Re: [sliverslinger] Strawberry Bay Marina-Jet Ski - SBennett - 04-29-2019

I'm going to keep on saying it:

Even days wakeless/odd days wake ok.
OR,
10 hp max on even days/ unlimited on odd days.
This would not be on all waters, just high conflict waters.
It sucks but most of the power squadron do not have common manners. Plus I am tired of waiting behind wakeboard boats to be decontaminated.
This way at least I pick my poison.
This is a very common practice in lots of other US waters.
With the population growth out of control and this being the second driest state it is inevitable.
We might as well try to be in the drivers seat.
Comments/ thoughts?

Your suggestion is a little extreme for Strawberry. Maybe appropriate for some other waters though.

I would not consider Strawberry a high conflict water.

For now.

I would submit that there are reasons that the Berry is not already a mecca for the power squadron. Nothing has stopped them previously from coming. I just don't see this as a big deal.

And yes, they annoy me too. [Wink]

Motorised watercraft are state registered motor vehicles and come under the jurisdiction of the state. That is why states can restrict HP on lakes, can restrict speed limits on lakes and things like that. All motor boat regulations in Utah come from Parks and Recreation, federal land or not, the water is held in trust by and for the state. I believe, but could be mistaken because this is not to say that the state hasn't turned those enforcement rights over to the fed.
Who patrols the Berry? Forest service or state parks?

I agree that the berry will not become a mecca for PWC's. Water to cold, drive to far...now, not to start anything because I like the people at the marina, but with Utah's new .05 alcohol limit for DWI, I bet many users will be over the limit and if we see that we should report it.

Re: [Troll] Strawberry Bay Marina-Jet Ski - SkunkedAgain - 04-29-2019

I think your water temp comment and distance sets the tone for issues with power squadron, it's already open for them to show up and if they aren't there, that probably tells you that its not that fun to freeze when riding, plus I hear they have plenty of wind up there, so the combination doesn't make it a high use target to me... The warmer, closer lakes will get the majority of recreational users... The ones you get, will most likely be more hard core and as such, probably more courteous to be around... Don't sell all your boats and give up just yet... unless you're selling really cheap and I'm first in line... Later J

The state does in fact have jurisdiction over things like boat safety, registration, and compliance with Federal watercraft standards. And they also set standards and restrictions on those bodies of water that are under their State Parks contracts with the appropriate Federal agencies such as the Forest Service, Bureau of Reclamation, et al. They do NOT set speed limit or HP restrictions for those bodies of water that are NOT under their contractual control. For example, Porcupine is wakeless because the water company that manages it says it is wakeless. Utah did not/does not have a say in it. They just list it as such in their list of of wakeless waters. I know this to be true because I got it listed as wakeless last year by having several conversations with the state and the water manager. Before last year, there was a sign on the dam that said it was wakeless, but it was not listed as such on the States list. It is now.[/#800000]
[#800000]
[/#800000]
[#800000]Cutler has a HP restriction for use there. It was set by Pacific Power because they own it. The State had no say in the matter because the State has no ownership in Cutler.[/#800000]
[#800000]
[/#800000]
[#800000]There are other examples. Utah does not have any ownership or control over recreational use of Strawberry other than the boats used there must comply with State regulation as to registration, safety, etc. They also set fishing regulations for it. There are lots of agreements between the Feds and the State that make this work. But if the Feds (Forest Service) decided they wanted to limit the HP alowed for use on Strawberry, the State would be powerless to prevent it. The State only has control of those functions at Strawberry that the Forest Service allows them to control.[/#800000]
[#800000]
[/#800000]
[#800000]I am not aware of a permanent Parks & Recs boat at either marina (Strawberry/Soldier Creek) like there is at every State Park. Do they occasionally tow a boat up there to check compliance? I would guess they do. But since I'm never there on weekends (I'm retired [Wink]), I've never seen one on the water and have never been checked up there like I have been several times at State Parks.[/#800000]
