strawberry 5/26 good fishing - mtncat1 - 05-27-2018

Strawberry treated us pretty well today 8 nice kokes all on rmt dodgers and super squids, skyler crane and his awesome wife were nice enough to go with me for a great day of koke fishing ,probably caught another 15 cutts . note to all strawberry anglers they are serious about the slot restrictions ,watched a poor guy get ticketed for one fish in the slot today .no warnings are given for this .all fish 15 to 22 must be release

Great report Rich, not sure what a Super Squid is, are they something new?
IMO it's about time the DWR started giving out tickets for people keeping slot cutts, it has only been the against the law forever. Remember those people that keep slot cutts are taking them away from you and I and IMO that's one of the reasons we see so few cutts caught that are above the slot. Like that time you and I stopped by the cleaning station there and that guy was cleaning a slot cutt and he claimed it was a rainbow. It's time for that to stop and I for one commend the DWR for taking action.

it is a squid that has a Indiana Spinner Blade on it

you see it a lot cleaning a slot cutt and claiming it was a rainbow.
maybe they need to put a big picture in the cleaning station of both fish.
I don't even know why any one would keep a cutthroat trout.
but then I'm not a big fish eater.

It wouldn't help. There are some people who will plead ignorance right up until they die. It doesn't matter who tells them that the fish they have are cutthroats, they'll profess to a judge that they have rainbows.

Love the Smiles in the pics.
I like most on here (I would guess) are good rot hear they are ticketing the law breakers.
My son inlaw was not to happy with me one day when I told him 21 1/2" is not 22".

I wonder does anyone know what the fine is?

i actually felt bad for this guy they had one 21 inch cutt between the 2 of them .
on the bright side the ranger checked out my fillet method and said it was fine as lond as head and tail were attached .

honestly you could go to the cleaning station and write tickets all day every day , on year they had a fish check by the visitor center and had several coolers packed full of illegal cutts
honestly you could go to the cleaning station and write tickets all day every day
[#800000]Yep! I also see this violation at Strawberry way too often. From the Guidebook:[/#800000]
Quote:Possession of filleted fish
While you are in the act of fishing, it is unlawful to possess filleted fish from the current day’s catch or fish that have had their heads or tails removed. This does not apply to fish processed for immediate consumption or from a previous day’s catch. At most waters, you may fillet harvested game fish, or remove their heads or tails, after you have:
• Completed the act of fishing
• Arrived at camp
• Reached a fish-cleaning station
• Arrived at a principle means of land transportation
At Strawberry Reservoir, Scofield Rese rvoir, Lost Creek Reservoir and Panguitch Lake, you may not fillet trout and salmon, and you may not remove their heads or tails while in the field or in transit.

Note: Do not dispose of entrails and carcasses on the bank. Leave them in the water where you caught the fish.
[#800000]Going from memory here, but I think the signage at the Strawberry cleaning stations say you CAN fillet any fish you will consume that day if you are camping there. All other fish MUST have their heads and tails attached until you get them home - even if you are camped there multiple days in a row.[/#800000]
[#800000]
[/#800000]
[#800000]And remember this from the Guidebook:[/#800000]
Quote:Additional limit in the field
You may possess up to two daily limits of fish as you travel within Utah—or if you leave the state—as long as you meet the following conditions:
• You are on an overnight or multi-day fishing trip at any Utah waterbody, excluding Strawberry Reservoir or Flaming Gorge Reservoir. (At those two reservoirs, you may have only one daily limit in your possession.)

your right bob there are plenty of signs around the marina but it deems people don't really read them.
it's my under standing that you can fillet for immediate consumption ie: right next to the pan . i think that ranger would have ticketed me if my knife slipped and the fillet separated . he did look . just sayin

Although I don't fish for Kokes very often, only with a friend that has a place at the Gorge. I noticed one day when he had them filleted ,he left a strip of skin on each end of the fillet. He told me so they can be identified. Is that a legal way to do it ?

I guess I'd better be checking regulations, if I am going to be keeping those Kokes while fishing with him, hate to be a partner in crime.

Re: [up2nogood] strawberry 5/26 good fishing - mtncat1 - 06-04-2018

at flaming gorge you have to leave evidence if species on the fillets. at strawberry it's head and tail attached ,on a side note their grinders can't handle heads ,and can barely handle the guts [Wink]

Thanks, I appreciate the info. From now I plan on paying a little more attention to the regulations.

Re: [mtncat1] strawberry 5/26 good fishing - WET1 - 06-04-2018

We may be using a similar method. I gut mine and then cut the fillet down to the tail leaving about the last 1/2" attached on both sides. Then when I get home it's just a very quick touch of the knife to remove the fillet and no mess to clean up. I've been checked a couple times and had no issues as this meets the letter of the law. Head and tail are still attached and intact for measuring , which they would only do if it was in fact a cut and not a koke. Still a stupid rule in my book as I think they should just enforce the law more like it sounds they are doing now and not have stupid rules for a specific body of water just because people are trying to get away with breaking the law.

i've been doing it like that for a while , i talked to my buddy the other day and he has just been driving home to a community pond and using the cleaning station there
