Lake Cascade 1/26 - 1/30 - trueblue2 - 02-02-2017 Was able to get up to Cascade Lake with my son to fish for some of those jumbo perch there. Lots of snow ... lots of slush ... few fishermen. Saw several coyotes crossing the lake on a dead run, saw two herds of whitetails (one eight point), a bobcat came to visit us at the cabin, caught 53 perch mostly 13+ inches and had a super fish fry for all the family. Stopped by to see Tackle Tom and that's always a pleasure. Did not meet up with any BFTer's from Utah and not sure if they made it up this year. The lake had 10" solid ice + 10" slush + 10" snow. We had to resort to wearing snowshoes and was very grateful we didn't bury one of the snowmobiles. Very cold at first, but it warmed up some before we left. On 1/31 we had to leave by noon and a snowstorm delayed us some. Complete whiteout. Would probably still be there going in circles if it weren't for my handheld GPS. It reminded me of fishing in the fog at Strawberry. Caught all our perch at 34 FOW and north of the island. Here was the talley ... 1/25 afternoon: (5); 1/26 (14 with a couple over 14"); 1/27 (4); 1/28 (4); 1/29 (4); 1/30 (18); 1/31 (5). Here's the pictures: [signature] Re: [trueblue2] Lake Cascade 1/26 - 1/30 - wiperhunter2 - 02-02-2017 Thanks for the report and pics Fred, cool pic of the bobcat, looks like it was pretty close. What kind of rod holder is that in your last pic? [signature] Re: [wiperhunter2] Lake Cascade 1/26 - 1/30 - trueblue2 - 02-03-2017 The rod holder is home made. I like a rod holder that balances the rod so light bites can be detected better. Also the rod is suspended on a spring loaded brass rod so you can just grab it for a fast hookup. The vertical part unscrews from the base so it packs better in the sled. It worked really well at Lake Cascade.i can sketch it up for you if you like. The wife and I got caught several times in the thick snow on the lake last Jan. and had to use the handheld GPS to find our way back to the Poison Creek launch. One night it was dark as we headed in and snowing like crazy, doesn't seem to have small flakes up there always seems like they are about the size of a quarter. Did you make it up to where the wife and I met up with you last winter? [signature] Re: [PACKFAN] Lake Cascade 1/26 - 1/30 - trueblue2 - 02-03-2017 Yes, we did. We tried several other spots but could only find fish where we were last year. The GPS showed that we were adjacent to a steep drop off where a submerged creekbed entered the deeper water. If you get a chance to go back, I'll give you the coordinates. How did you and wife do at CJStrike? Thanks J [signature] Re: [trueblue2] Lake Cascade 1/26 - 1/30 - PACKFAN - 02-03-2017 It was my oldest son and I, we caught fish but we didn't hammer them like a friend of mine from Utah did the weekend before. Perch ran from 10-11 inches and a few crappie thrown in as well. The largest crappie I caught was exactly 14 inches. the others probably 10-11 inches. I won't be going up to Cascade until next winter. I was planning on retiring in June but April is looking much better. I don't know about this one. Is it the black wedding ring with a ![]() [signature] Re: [trueblue2] Lake Cascade 1/26 - 1/30 - doitall5000 - 02-03-2017 wow those are perch with BACK STRAPS!! Looks like a long drive up, How was the drive? Can you get other fish with the perch, maybe some Big trout too? [signature] Re: [doitall5000] Lake Cascade 1/26 - 1/30 - trueblue2 - 02-03-2017 It's a long drive, but worth it once you get there. Its 6 1/2 hours to Boise then another 1 3/4 hours to Cascade. Good place to stay is the Birch Glen Inn. You will need to stop by Tackle Tom's on Main Street for the latest information on where they are catching them and some bait. My advice is to not try it without a snowmobile because the distance from shore to best water is a long way and slush is terrible this year. North of the island is best and Poison Creek is probably the closest access point to that area, but its still 3 or 4 miles out to the good water. Yes, they have great trout fishing as well. While we were there the trout would come thru at about 10'. When I got bored waiting for the perch to bite I sometimes went up to that level for some excitement. Virtually every perch we caught regurgitated pin worms, thousands of them. The worms were about 1" long and very small diameter, maybe about 1/32". There definitely does not seem to be as many perch this year as in the past. Everyone locally thinks its on a down cycle. From my point of view one 14" perch has a lot more meat than 10 of the smaller ones. If you decide to go I recommend taking some snowshoes, ropes and a shovel. Best of luck to you. That's why I'm thinking about trout too. I've never been there, like new places, with options. [signature] |
