The ubiquitous "they" have regulations on many lakes limiting hp on boats to less than 10. That's why the 9.9 hp was invented. Yeah, someone might magically turn a 9.9 into a 15, but it's still pretty tough to get much "water sport" with that. [fishon][fishon][fishon]

I've been following this thread with interest. I agree with pretty much everything TD said so I have nothing to add there. I was, however, mystified about the different numbers being bandied about so I went to the stocking report to see what I could learn:
In July there were two plantings of .58" and .80" totaling 82,516 fry
In September two plantings of 29.99" adults were made totaling 321
In September 20,000 3.59" fingerlings were planted
In October 18,912 4.38" fingerlings were added
That's 121,428 young of the year and 321 adults for a grand total of 121,749
I saw nothing of the planting of bullhead/channel hybrids, and have never heard of such a cross. I would be interested in knowing more.
I surmise (better than assume) that the 29.99" figure is a nominal, or roughly estimated, figure. By my calculations fish like that should weigh around 11 pounds. I do see it possible that fish recovering from the spawn might be drawn down some, but...

The answer to his question is that, officially, there aren't any smallmouth bass in Mantua. I get that from two separate sources. One source lists the fish species found in Mantua as Bluegill, Green Sunfish, Largemouth Bass, Rainbow Trout, Tiger Trout, and Yellow Perch. I had written that there were something like 10 species in Mantua, just going off my sometimes faulty memory so I set out to see what I could find. I found a number of different sites, with differing degrees of "officialness". Among them they named the following 10 species as being in Mantua:
Largemouth bass
Bluegill
Yellow perch
Rainbow trout
Green sunfish
Channel catfish
Bullhead catfish
Tiger Trout
Smallmouth bass
Cutthroat trout

We've put two smallies in the boat while fishing Mantua. This was probably 10 years ago and both were harvested. Not, that I like keeping bass but I'd hate to see that prime largemouth fishery start to dwindle due to an abundance of smallies. I really don't think they would ever do well in there. Yes, I can tell the difference between a largemouth and smallmouth. These were definitely smallies.

I caught a cutthroat just last week so they are still in there.
Interesting that there still could be smallies in there. Like I said, I've fished it a decen amount of times and have never seen one.

[#0000FF]A similar situation happened a few years ago on Deer Creek. Several white bass were caught and it was feared they were going to take over and ruin the fishery. Nay, not so. Only a handful were ever reported and nothing since. Ditto for channel cats in Deer Creek. Bucket biology foiled again.

Not sure what to think about the channels planted in there, but it is what it is.
Maybe they should go ahead and put some Tiger Muskies in there too...why not? [
